GR 8 CONFIRMATION INTRODUCTION HISTORY PRESENT PROGRAM AND RESPONSIBILITIES
HISTORICAL OVERVIEW OF THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION

In order to gain a fuller understanding of the place of the sacrament of Confirmation within the sacramental life of the historical Church, it is necessary to take an overall look at the development of this sacrament.

Pope Paul VI, in his declaration "Apostolic Constitution on the Sacrament of Confirmation," has linked the three sacraments of Christian Initiation by saying that "the faithful are born anew by Baptism, strengthened by the sacrament of Confirmation, and finally are sustained by the food of eternal life in the Eucharist".

Confirmation is viewed as part of the process of Christian initiation wherein it relies and draws upon both Baptism and Eucharist. As the Church began to grow, expanding not only into the larger urban centres but also into the rural countrysides, the practice of Christian Initiation became more and more difficult to fulfill in its original form. The bishop could not always be present to preside at these events, and, therefore, he needed to delegate his authority to the parish priest. Still, the authority and power of the bishop as the "original" minister of the sacrament is preserved by having the bishop bless the oils used in the anointing.

The Holy Spirit was the gift of God, which came to rest on Jesus, as is told in the account of His Baptism. He promised to give this same Spirit to His disciples, a promise fulfilled at Pentecost. Through the apostles and their successors, the bishops, the gift of the Holy Spirit is still imparted upon Christians to this day.

One must keep in mind, the role of Confirmation in the entire process of Christian initiation, as well as remember that it is not the sole means of reception of God's Spirit, but rather, a bringing to perfection that which was begun at Baptism.
