In the Archdiocese of Toronto, Cardinal Archbishop Ambrozic has decided that the normal age for confirmation will be in Grade Eight, between 12 - 14 years of age.
The celebration of the sacraments are of the utmost importance in the life of the church and in each of its members. The sacraments are public celebrations of our faith and as such are celebrated whenever possible, in the midst of the believing community, the parish.
The families and the Catholic schools are rooted in the sacramental life of the parish. The weekly Sunday liturgies are of primary importance in nurturing and sustaining a Catholic way of life.
It is in the home that a child is first introduced to God and to the Christian way of life. The family is the domestic church and is rooted in the parish. As a child grows and enters the Catholic school system, he or she is educated within an environment which reflects, embodies and teaches a Catholic way of life. Children in the Catholic schools participate in ongoing religious education or what is called the initial preparation for the celebration of the sacraments.
When it is time for a child to prepare for the celebration of a sacrament, it is known as the immediate preparation. It is the parish that assumes the responsibility for the immediate preparation of the sacraments by providing a sacramental instruction which is designed to meet the needs of the candidates.
"Anointed for Mission" is a Confirmation preparation process designed to take place from the time of registration meeting to the date of confirmation. This particular program has been written for all parishes within the Archdiocese of Toronto. It is understood that all candidates for Confirmation will prepare for the celebration in the same way even though the initial preparation may have some differences. In practical terms this means that there would be only one immediate preparation program. There is no need to make any distinction between candidates attending the Catholic schools and those educated in other systems.
This resource embraces Confirmation as a sacrament of initiation and presumes that the parish recognizes in word and deed that the celebration of the sacraments are church events. The catechesis and celebrations are parish centered and designed to be held in the parish.
