WORLD YOUTH DAY 2005

History of World Youth Day
At the end of 1983, Pope John Paul II proclaimed an extraordinary Holy Year of jubilee to mark 1950 years since the Redemption carried out by Christ through his Death and Resurrection. The theme was: "Aperite portas Redemptori", "Open the doors to the Redeemer". At the end of this extraordinary Jubilee the Pope invited young people from all over the world to a large meeting, on Palm Sunday 1984. The participation was so overwhelming that in 1985, International Youth Year proclaimed by the United Nations Organization, the Pope invited again for a large youth meeting on Palm Sunday, in Rome. Impressed by the success of these meetings, the Pope, on December 1985, solemnly announced the institution of an annual meeting for the youth.

Every two years there should be celebrated, together with the Pope, an international World Youth Day, at a specific place in the world. In the years in between, young people are invited to celebrate World Youth Day on Palm Sunday in their dioceses, together with their bishops. Therefore World Youth Day 1986 is the first World Youth Day, whereas World Youth Day 2005 in Cologne will be the XX World Youth Day.

After the experiences of the first World Youth Days, Pope John Paul II wrote in his Apostolic Exhortation 'Christifideles Laici' (1988):

"The Church has so much to talk about with youth, and youth have so much to share with the Church. This mutual dialogue, by taking place with great cordiality, clarity and courage, will provide a favourable setting for the and exchange between generations, and will be a source of richness and youthfulness for the Church and civil society."
